The Specifics of Qurbani

Mustafa Zakir

Information about Zabihat (Qurbani) on the day of Eid ul Adha.

"The Zabihat is very rewarding on the day of Idd ul Adha," said Rasulullah (SA) in a sermon delivered on the day of Idd ul Adha.

The zabihat can be performed on 10th of Zilhaj after sunrise, i.e. after Khutba, till Zawal. Qurbani can also be performed on 11th and 12th of Zilhaj from sunrise till the time of Zawal. No qurbani (of Idd ul adha) can be performed on 13th of Zilhaj by mumineen anywhere in the world except in Mina after Haj pilgrimage.

Attention of mumineen is drawn to the fact that the first drop of blood that flows after the slitting of the throat of zabihat becomes the kaffarat of all sins of the one who offers qurbani.

Those who are performing qurbani at their own premises should necessarily take Raza from Saheb e Raza.

It is desirable that the person who is offering qurbani should perform the zabihat himself/herself If one cannot, then one should put one's hand over the hand of the person who is doing zabihat on one's behalf. If this is also not possible then one must stand near the zabihat and observe any say "BISMILLAHE ALLAH O AKBAR" loudly and recite the doa "Vajjahto Vajheya...".

Any mumin can do zabihat on behalf of the person intending to offer qurbani if it is not possible for one to do so.

The preference of qurbani is as follows:
A female camel is most preferable. The next best is He Camel, next is Cow, then a Bull, then a sheep, then a goat. Amongst sheep and goat male is preferable to female.

Before purchasing the sheep or goat for zabihat one should carefully check the following:

The following parts of the animal are reprehensible and must not be eaten.

  1. The glands (gadood)

  2. The spinal cord (rhihr ni haddi no gheer)

  3. The spleen (tilli)

  4. The inner parts of kidney (Gurda no ander no hisso)

  5. The male and female reproductive organs and womb

  6. The testicles (Kapoora)
