Kumail bin Zyad RA says that once Amirul Mumineen held my hands and led me twoards the cementry. When we had passed through it he heaved a sigh and said:
"Kumail, All hearts are recepticles of knowledge and wisdom, and the best of them all is the one that can hold the most, and what it holds it can preserve and protect in the best way. Therefore, remember carefully what I have to say."
"Remember, that there are three kinds of people, the first are those who are learned, highly versed in the ethics of philosophy and religion, second are those who are acquiring knowledge for the sake of salvation, and the third class is that of the uneducated. They follow every pretender and accept every slogan, they have neither acquired any knowledge nor have secured support of firm and rational convictions."
"O Kumail, remember that knowledge is better than wealth, it is kowledge that guards you while you are the protector of wealth. Wealth decreases upon expenditure while knowledge increases the more you use it. The good done by wealth always ends when it is depleted. "
"Know, O Kumail, Perception of knowledge is religion. Man achieves the power to command obediance by knowledge and is remembered for it after his death. Remember, knowledge is the ruler and wealth is the subject."
"Men who amass wealth though alive are yet dead to the realities of life, while men of knowledge live forever, their faces may disappear but their examples are remembered as memories in the hearts of men."
Then Amirul Mumineen pointed to his chest and said:
""Here I have in store treasures of knowledge, I wish I could find someone to share it with! Alas, I find a few, but he who is intelligent is not trustworthy; he would sell his salvation for the pleasures of this world. He would use religion as a pretense to acquire worldly power, he would exploit his knowledge against Awliya'ullah and use Allah's bounties to supress the subjects of Allah. Yet another person, I find him an obedient one, a follower of Haq, but his mind has not recieved the light of knowledge and at the slightest ambiguity or doubt he would get suspicious and rush towards skepticism. So neither he or that are capable of acquiring the superior knowledge that I impart. "
"Yet another one, a mere follower of worldly desires, his lure for lust is never ending. Inordinate desires can drag him away from the path of religion easily. The forth, an acquisitive miser, who will risk his life to get hold of wealth. Both of them resemble beasts having appetite for food and propagation. And, thus, knowledge disappears with the death of its gaurdians."
"But, behold, that the land of Allah will never stay without the bearer of knowledge imparted by Allah. Whether he be well known and famous; or guide toward Allah under fear of harm and hide from the public gaze. Such that the proof of Haq will never diminish. Oh! how many and where are they? They are few in number, but their worth and rank before is very high. Through them Allah preserves his teaching until they hand it over to persons like themselves. Their knowledge has made the visualise the truth and realities, and instilled into them the spirit of faith and conviction. The hardships of life and worships are bounties to them. Things that frighten the ignorant (like death) makes them feel safe and happy. They live in this world like everyone else but their souls sour the heights of heavenly eminence. They are the delegates of Allah on his land and they invite towards him. Oh! how I wish to see them and seek their company, O Kumail!""
Saying this his tears fell on his face, then he declared:
""I have told you all that I have to say, you may return home when you like."
